Verena Ballhaus was born in 1951 in Gemünden. She studied arts and art education at the Academy for Fine Arts in Munich. Apart from illustrating children's books she worked as a stage designer. She has received several awards for her illustrations, among them the prestigious Jugendliteraturpreis.
